THE ZINE

Hyperlocal's zine, Dose of Durham, is your guide to exploring the history, culture, and beauty of the Bull City. Each monthly “prescription” reimagines Durham through a different lens and is packed with history lessons, challenges, recipes, current events, sights to see, bike routes, and more - all delivered to you in a digestible dose.
A zine is a small-circulation, self-produced booklet or magazine!

I came to Durham on accident, and stayed on purpose. Opportunity brought me to Durham in 2014 when I moved here for college on scholarship, but I was very much a stranger to the city during those years. After a brief stint overseas for grad school, I landed back in the Bull City as a working-class adult in 2021 - on the tail end of the pandemic - and had virtually no sense of belonging. I didn't have a car, so I learned how to ride a bike, and it was transformative to my life. It helped me rediscover Durham and I started making zines to share things I discovered with others in a way that felt accessible, and down-to-earth. Being proud of where you live is essential to cultivate a sense of community, so my aim with Hyperlocal has always been to foster connectedness to Durham.
